Supermoto racing is one of the most exciting things you can do with your clothes on.
All we did were a few track days, as the pace of Cycle News life meant we could hardly get a free moment to go racing, much less develop a steed that could handle it.
Forwe had a new Suzuki RM-Z sitting around the office, and, since a year ago, we moved right next door to the gurus at AHM Factory Serviceswe decided to build another bike. Only this time we would finally get into the suspension and go racing for real to see how we stacked up. That was last year, and for Suzuki changed back to a new spring fork that made it easier to get into and mess with so we could dial in a medium setup that could easily be changed back to standard when it was time to give the bike back.
We had a few parts left over from our previous supermoto build, including the inch Dubya rims laced to Talon hubs and Motomaster front-brake setup, and fitting the two meant about two hours gone out of the day. These tires have been nothing short of outstanding.
The Metzelers have a super-soft compound and give you loads of feedback as they compress and spread out into the turn, making you feel like the contact patch is about two feet wide. I love this rubber. We also gave the bike an all-new look, with Rad Graphics delivering some superb Cycle News blue-and-yellow graphics that made our little home-brewed supermoto look almost factory.
Brandon made a name for himself building flat-track bikes and understands the nuances of suspension across different forms of racing, so the RM-Z was a bit like going back to his roots. The idea was that we wanted this to be a very basic, cost-effective build, one that could easily be switched back to a standard motocross setup later in the year when we gave the bike back to Suzuki.
The spring rate was bumped up in the forks only, as the shock sprung was proper for rider weight of pounds with no riding gear. The idea was to have the added fork-spring rate to assist in fork hold-up under braking and to keep more pressure on the rear of the bike, helping it turn. As such, compression damping was stiffened up, as was rebound damping to slow the shock down and to help with rear-end traction, get better drive and induce less pitching front to back.
All in all, it was a pretty simple setting change and very cost effective, allowing the user to still have a versatile bike.
So, does it all work? In short, yes.
2018 Suzuki RM-Z450 Supermoto Build
Riding a standard motocross bike with supermoto wheels and tires is a like riding a very fast see-saw, as the thing pitches like mad on the front and dumps all its weight on the rear when getting on the gas. One quick session at Adams with the re-valved Suzuki, and it felt like a new bike, so the only thing left to do now was go racing on the thing.Trade-in Value Trade In. Zip Code:. But once the fuel has reached its resting place intervenes yet another factor which makes the engine offer better response down low, through the mid-range, and all the way to the top end: the new design of the combustion chamber. Also, the intake and exhaust valve angle guides have been narrowed and squish areas increased in order to achieve better air and fuel mixing and implicit a bigger bang in the cylinder.
Very ingeniously, the front fender has a sloped-down shape with the purpose of guiding the air current to the air ducts and offer better cooling. At the rear end, the fender comes with air intakes on each side, a deciding factor for intake effectiveness. The next, best and natural choice was to mate the redesigned engine to a 5-speed transmission that will get the best out of it. That was also made possible through the link type shifting mechanism.
ForSuzuki decided to go for the semi-dry-sump lubrication system featuring separate oil chambers for the tranny and crankshaft using the tranny as the oil sump. This leaves room for lowering the crankshaft, reducing the engine height and has the rider more in control with a lower center of gravity. In what concerns the chassis, most pieces are made of aluminum and Suzuki focused on delivering a quick-handling and yet properly-accommodating machine. They started with the frame which was built from an aluminum alloy making the piece light and yet rigid, perfect for closed-course competitions.
The great balance achieved between these two features of the frame also gave it the needed sharpness in what concerns the way it performs. Showa delivered the suspensions. A fully adjustable cartridge-style front fork does a perfect job in keeping the weight down and absorbing the shock of the bumps.
At the rear end there is the same formula only that this time it applies on shock absorber which keeps things in control through tight corners and in bumpy situations. Brake rotors were designed to cool easily and not from the water in the mud as they deflect that very easily thanks to their new racy shape. Also dealing with mud are the footpegs which offer maximum clearance between the mounting bracket and footrest. Well positioned in place, the rider can now concentrate on winning rather than on not falling down the bike.
In Suzuki introduced the big four-stroke RM model, one that would show a whole different face of competitions, totally different of the two-stroke idea. The bike came with a totally new cc liquid-cooled, single-cylinder, four-stroke, DOHC, four-valve engine and a frame that was made out of aluminum instead of steel.
A Keihin FCR40MX was the feeding unit for the new powerplant and it has done the job properly in the first years of manufacturing until in Suzuki announced that fuel injection will come to motocross. Forthe Suzuki engine was slightly retuned for more power output in the low-and-mid rpm range and the intake port was redesigned. Carburetor was reset and the ignition map improved.
The extra power allowed slightly taller gearing, smoothing power delivery and redesigned shift forks improve shifting feel. Suzuki also repositioned the hot start lever for ease of operating. There was the need for more control during tight cornering and over bumps so the steering head was modified and the swingarm had 5 mm taller arms.
This makes the CRF even more powerful than previous model years and a close-ratio five-speed transmission is here to provide a gear for every riding situation. Yamaha has also introduced the motocross lineup, with the YZF on top of it. Strongly revised and with a background full of successes, this is definitely among the strongest opponents the RM-Z will have to face. Kawasaki enters the competition with a totally redesigned engine that has the same characteristics as the Yamaha one, only that it has four valves.DVR exhaust company was founded by Peter Nekvapil as production exhaust system manufacturer in Firm is engaged in hand made high quality for motocross and supermoto motorcycles.

Here is a sport that, at face value, should be booming across the world because it answers a bunch of problems surrounding sporting motorcycles in the 21 st century. Supermoto hit its peak about 10 years ago in the U. An ultra-competitive national championship with big name riders like Jeff Ward, Doug Henry and Chris Fillmore, factory teams, television coverage and X-Games races all made for one incredibly spectacular form of bike sport.
The fact that the sport is so adaptable to changing environments makes its demise from our motorcycling conscious all the more remarkable, and sad. What does it take to convert your dirtbike to a supermoto machine? Not much, it turns out. Next were the brakes, so Moto-Master jumped on board and sent us a complete Supermoto race kitwhich was originally designed for a RM-Z from but still fits the current model. Before I start, let me just tell you that this was by far the easiest modification work I have ever done on a motorcycle.
The whole job took less than two hours. The first thing to do was remove the front and rear wheels and the front brake assembly. For a while there I thought the chain would require cutting but the axle and the chain blocks fit snugly at the end of the swingarm.

With the wheels and brakes all tightened up, it was simply a matter of bleeding the brake fluid through up the front and we were done. In under two hours! We kept the stock suspension settings from Suzuki because in this first run, I simply wanted to see how the bike performed with the smaller wheels and slicks.
We managed to sneak in four sessions on our new toy, and let me tell you, this is about as much fun as you can have with your pants on! I was absolutely amazed at just how well this thing worked straight out of the shop. Even with bog-stock suspension, the Suzuki tracked beautifully and turned on an absolute dime. A lifetime rider, the Aussie made the trek across the Pacific to live the dream in the U.
